165392 Andrew Bedford <a_bedford@h...> 2006‑12‑03 Introduction/Bio
Fellow Galoots,

I'd been reading this list for a few months now, and I figured it was
about time to join in on the fun.

A little about me.....I'm 24, living in New Brunswick, Canada (brrr). I
work as a graphic designer for a software company that produces the
insanely complex software that hydrographers/oceanographers use to map
the ocean/ocean floor/rivers/lakes...etc etc.

I've been woodworking since I was a kid(although I refuse to admit that
I am no longer a kid...and I'm sure some of you will agree). My mother
used to teach folkart, which meant my father used to have to spend his
winter evenings out in the shed buzzing away at the scroll saw....and of
course I would be standing there amazed at what my father was doing. And
so my obsession with workwood began. Around the age of 12 I took up
whitling (I've got the scars to prove it!), a few years later this
progressed to relief carving, which then progressed into building
furniture that I could detail with carvings.

Now..at the same time all of this was going on, I was slowly being
influenced by the activist scene. This turned me into a
vegetarian/vegan, enviromentalist, primitivist, anti-consumerist, yadda
yadda yadda, and all the other "ist's" and "ism's" out there. Now this
lead me to the next logical step. I'd have become a devout galoot! So I
gave away all my power tools...which left me standing there scratching
my head, and thinking "well, now what do I do". Well I slowly started
figuring stuff out, and It's been 2 years since my powered days, and I
love it. It's the most relaxing, thrilling, and engaging thing I've ever
persued. My antique/homemade tool collection is progressing very nicely.
Yeah, so I've been completely broke for a few years, but I've got tools!
Who needs groceries when you can have one more plane! :)

So, this is me..and I look forward to spending years obsorbing the
collective knowledge and experience this list has to offer.

Your humbled apprentice, Andrew Bedford

Hello Andrew,

Welcome to the Porch, you will get no argument, at least not from me, if
you want to call yourself a kid at 24. And there is no question that you are
indeed a Galoot.

Keep a lookout for edged tools made by "JOSIAH FOWLER CO. LTD. ST.JOHN
N.B." (that's how he stamped Saint John on his tools). The chisels and a
drawknife of his manufacture that I picked up years ago when still living in
the Maritimes are of top quality. IMHO.

Hope the vegetarian life style has not kept you away from the Moosehead
;^)

regards,
Marv Paisner

Welcome to the porch! Somehow I can't see your email address on the
digest? I sense we have some OT interests to share :>

Pull up a chair and have some tofu salad :>

Ps: Thanks very much to everyone who has replied to my question on the
timber framing tools and a special thanks to David Lucier who has
very generously offered to lend me a few items, you guys are great!

"This is what you shall do: Love the earth and sun and the animals,
despise riches, give alms to every one that asks, stand up for the
stupid and crazy, devote your income and labor to others, hate tyrants,
argue not concerning God, have patience and indulgence toward the
people, take off your hat to nothing known or unknown or to any man or
number of men, go freely with powerful uneducated persons and with the
young and with the mothers of families, read these leaves in the open
air every season of every year of your life, re-examine all you have
been told at school or church or in any book, dismiss whatever insults
your own soul; and your very flesh shall be a great poem and have the
richest fluency not only in its words but in the silent lines of its
lips and face and between the lashes of your eyes and in every motion
and joint of your body." - Preface to Leaves of Grass - Walt Whitman
