Mick Dowling pops up his head Down Under and asks:

John Walter's Stanley tools book has this to say:

"Type 2: ...(1871 to 1878) Type 2 does not have the model number and
prior to Sargent's 1879 patent, screws were used to attach the flexible
steel sole.

"Type 1: ...(1867 to 1871)...Type 1 has a steel sole with four strips
that fold up, acting as locking guides when the wing nuts are tightened.
This was a fragile design and not many Type 1 models have survived;
hence the scarcity. Sole and guides are cut from a single piece of steel
and do not have rivets or a hinge as on later types. Earlier types have
a solid brass adjustment screw...."

Type 3s, (1879-1884) have no descriptive text in Walter.

I'm not sure this helps, but it's all I can find.
