Greetings Galoots, Neanderthals, and assorted misfits: I'm what you would call a woodworking wannabe. I've got a basement full of electron fed tools that have almost never been used. About a year ago I stumbled onto the Neanderthal forum over at sawmillcreek.org. Something in the obsessive compulsive part of my brain (some would say that's the whole bundle) clicked. An ill advised #4 purchase off ebay led to some research. Garret Hack books, supertools.com, Bailey type studies. And so now I bottom feed on ebay, scouting for the mislabeled, the misspelled, the things that have escaped the view of the thundering ebay hordes. I've got more low knob stanley rust than anyone needs. An almost perfect Ohio Tool #7 (I think at this point I'm supposed to let Jeff know that's a Jointer) for $10 because the owner posted it as a SAVAGE plane, the name of a previous owner stamped into the otherwise unlabeled iron. I got two Disston 10" back saws for $10 because the seller posted them as "OISSTON?" And sadly, I just missed a Keen Kutter K8 (That's a stanley bedrock rebranded Jointer plane, Jeff) for $20 because the mad hordes found it right at the last minute, realized the "FOR PARTS" was bogus since all that was wrong was a cracked tote, and outbid me up near $90 within the last 15 seconds. So, the other day, through some twist of fate I stumbled on Tom Price's Galoot's Progress page. I read the FAQ about the Galoots. And one thought went through my head. "These are my people." So, here I am. In the very early stages of sliding headfirst down the slippery slope. I've been lurking for a few days to get the feel for the content, and I can tell I'm home. _______________ Chris Thompson ______________________________________________________________ |

Oh yeah!! This is the place, and these are the people. I found a home here several years ago. If you like old tools and the old ways of doing things, this is the place for you. Welcome aboard! Welcome! Glad to have you here. I bought my first hand plane about 3 years ago. My 9-year-old GIT made me count them the other day; I'm up to 110. I hope to even use one soon ;-) Gary K Close to Buffalo NY where all of the basements are flooded . . . ----- Original Message ----- From: "Chris Thompson" |

Hey Chris, Welcome to the porch! I'm pretty new here myself and these folks have made me feel right at home. Probably the best group on the net bar none. I colle....uh use old hand tools in New York City. This means that I live in a tiny space, work on the floor, clamp things onto my kitchen table, and hold things down with my feet! Welcome! Noel Urban Galoot BTW-A good tip when trauling for *bay tools: Download the photo of the item, open it up on your desktop and zoom in. Ripoff artists like to "airbrush" cracks and welds and this will show up when you zoom-in on the photo and see that a particular area has an unusual "eveness" in a particular area. I spotted a weld like this on a rusty #4 recently and it saved me from much cursing and gnashing of teeth! ______________________________________________________________ |
