110398 "Mack McKinney" <wb2pcv@o...> 2002‑10‑05 New Bio (and Group Hug)
I was afraid it had faded into the ether...

The Oldtools list, that is.
I have once again set up a shop, am finishing up the "carpenter's tool
chest" I started 8 years ago that houses all my neanderdreams, and I began
pondering. Hmmm... I wonder if it's still out there... So, I did a little
surfing, and I found it -- the Holy Grail of woodworking -- the Front
Porch! It's still there, and I'm not! But...
I'm back.
In those days, I was blissfully pursuing a Master of Divinity degree in
Kentucky. Over the screams of the more self-righteous administration, I
somehow escaped from that otherwise esteemed institution with my parchment
and headed not toward my native western New York, where they have tools to
sell, but instead to Texas (can ya pick a horse's hoof with that thang?)
I'm in my sixth year as a "preacher", have one wife and one daughter (10)
and one son (5). And for the last four years or so the workload has been
so intense that I didn't make a single shaving until about 3 weeks ago,
when I got out the guitar I had started building 9 years ago...
I have been repairing miscreants of the violin family for 20 years, been a
computer guy (CAD), worked in a marina (sailing bum, handyman woodworker,
way too filthy for the girls), and a gunshop (is it unloaded?), and a
drywall installer (lots of seminary, little of scholarships).
I read my old bio, and it complains about the heat in my shop in
Kentucky... little did I know of the Hill Country of Texas! It's
beautiful, but it's Texas.
Present hobbies/therapy include: woodworking (again), shooting, music,
gardening, and Hill Country history.
Years ago I would sit on the front porch with all my grandfather's
brothers as they smoked pipes and talked of building things, farming, and
fishing. Those are some of the best memories I have. It has been a while
since I sat on this particular front porch, way too long. I've missed you
all -- good to be back!

Well, I for one remember Mack, which goes to show that some of us have
been around the porch for altogether too long a time, and come to think
of it, it's been a while since we layed a coat of milk paint on those
front rails and tidied up the mess of shavings left by some old hands.

just say(tm) the table top split stopped after I inlet a pair of
vikings.

Welcome back !

Richard Wilson The Yorkshireman Galoot. Locked away from his bench in
Worcesterhsire by working in Northamptonshire until December.

Yes, no doubt it IS fascinating.

Is there such a thing as being on the porch TOO long?? I don't think
there can be too long a time on the porch. It's just too much like
home.

Some of us may stop posting (like me) but stick around to enjoy the
reading and tales.
