47898 "Jon T. Patten" <jpatten1@m...> 1998‑08‑12 Bio - Jon Patten
Ok, So I need to post a Bio.

I would first like to apologize to the folks on the porch
for posting in the past prior to posting a bio. What's
the best polishing compound to use on that spitoon?

Now about me,

I'm 33, father of two young boys, husband of a SWMBO,
and hooked on woodworking big time. Started getting into
woodworking about 6 1/2 to 7 years ago. Was part of the Norm
crowd. Thought I had to have every power tool there was.
About two years ago, while I was making six sideboards out of
soft maple for my sister-in-laws hairshop(don't ask), I needed
to make the tops with a slight curve. First used a scrollsaw to
cut the rough curve out, then tried to sand it down smooth so
that it was one smooth arc. played with this for about 45
minutes on one top before I thought about possible using a
block plane. Had a very cheap sears block plane that badly
needed sharpening. went from the center to the edge in both
directions on the curve. After about two or three minutes,
the curve looked great with no hollows or bumps. Got me
hooked on handtools it did. Have acquired a fair amount
since then including a couple of Lie-Nielsen planes(more on that
later).
Been lurking here since February, and learning an awful
lot along the way. This is one great group!

Let's see, what's left.... oh my day job. I'm a Failure Analyst for
a semiconductor manufacturer. I determine why the chips fail. There
was a post awhile back from George Langford about access to a
SEM. We have three SEMs(all of which I know how to use), one
is an older Hitachi 520(about 20 years old) highest reasonable
magnification is 25,000x. The other two are JEOL SEMs, one a
5800 is configured with an EDX system and probably has a capability
of about 35,000x with a chamber capable of putting in a 5"square
sample. The other JEOL SEM is a field emission SEM that is capable of
getting a good image at around 120,000x depending on sample and a
sample size of 5" square. This SEM also has an EDX system on it.
We do have SIMS(secondary Ion Mass Spectrometer) system, but
would not be able to put any rusty tools in it(sorry). Also have
access and knowledge of a fair amount of chemicals(mostly geared
toward semiconductor deprocessing and delineation).

 AHOB,
               Jon Patten

Welcome to the porch Jon.

Maybe your mortise chisel was too dull. My chips usually just fall.

Jon now delivers the knock-out punch (how could I possibly delete any of
this)

And here I was still trying to come to terms with " pondering the
bifurcating lemma " courtesy of Cowtown Eric, boy do I have a lot to
learn! ;^)

Thanks for the welcome Marvin.

Actually it always seems to be my technique. 8 ) I've learned to sharpen
mychisels well enough to shave hairs.

Been at it for 10 years and still learning. Or at least that's what I try to

convince my boss I'm doing. 8 )

   Thanks again,
                       Jon
