93498 fmomoli@a... (Fausto Momoli) 2001‑06‑01 Bio

I have been lurking for a while now and decided that it
was time for me to post my Bio.

My name is Fausto Momoli. I am a few days short of 33
years old. I have BA in Economics and a day job at the
Corporate Treasury of a large corporation. Although I am
originally from Brazil I moved to the US a some years
ago and now I live 40mi northwest of Chicago with my
SWMBO and Samba (our dog, a friendly Rottweiler).

I started thinking about woodworking a little more than
2 years ago watching Norm (there, I confessed, I started
as a Normite.). This was the same time that we moved to
our first house (we were living in an apartment in
downtown Chicago before) so there was a need for new
furniture and not enough money to buy anything nice. You
know how the old line "I can make this if just buy that
tool" goes...

In the beginning I never thought about using hand tools.
Of course the always wise SWMBO always mentioned that
power tools didn't always exist and that people still
managed to make great furniture. My standard reply was
that it took years of practice to get to that point and
we didn't have time.... I don't think that what I said
is completely wrong, but I recently found out that it is
not so difficult as I thought.

The turning point in my short woodworking career
happened when I read the Handplane Book. I was actually
reading this book on a flight going to Brazil. When I
went to visit my parents I decided to restore a not so
old but rusty Bailey style #3 that my father had. I
ended up bringing the plane back with me and from that
moment on it was all downhill. Now I have this
irresistible urge to find flea markets and especially to
follow Garage Sale signs (I just picked up a nice brace
and yankee screwdriver during lunch today).

My collection is still small and comprised entirely
of "common" items and I use almost everything that I
have. I recently joined the M-WTCA and I am looking
forward to attend my first meeting in Battle Creek.
Hopefully I'll come back from the meeting with a few
more tools (and friends).

Thanks,

Fausto
