85435 "William Kohr" wm-kohr@h... 2000‑10‑25 William Kohr - Bio
Born in Northern Indiana to a family which in retrospect must have been
Galoots but just didn't know it yet. Grandfather taught first nine grades
in a one room school house, operated a farm, started a successful lumber
company and millwork shop and built houses - still don't know where he found
the time. Father moved the family from town to town along the Ohio river
building flood control projects for Army Corps of Engineers.

Earliest memories of Galoot inspired behavior recall endowment of the full
set of , then popular, children's tools at the age of seven. As I recall
the tools were pretty incapable of doing anything useful except the hammer -
much like the stuff you can buy at the store with all the orange banners
today. Said useful hammer was repossessed shortly after issuance and did
not reappear for many years - musta used it on something other than walnuts.

As I approached that point in my life where I was expected to continue my
education or get a real job I learned that I had won a lottery - not exactly
a state lottery, more of an Uncle Sam lottery and the garden spots I was
invited to did not seem very appealing. Having no interest in politics,
Canada was ruled out and my career in the US Navy began. I visited the
garden spots just the same but always had a hot meal to come back to. Never
figured out what I really wanted to do so I started in marine navigation -
yes sextants, stars, tables and no Virginia, there was no GPS - then on to
Intelligence (that's what they called it - really!) weapons and guidance
systems, computer systems, networks yada, yada.

Happily married to SWIMBO Mary (also computer guru/geek depending on your
perspective) and living in La Mesa, CA where the great weather makes up for
a distinct lack of nice old tools. Enjoy woodworking with hand tools and
admittedly still have a couple of those rascals with the long black pronged
tails. When not working in the shop, I buy and sell a few tools - told
SWIMBO I'm in business - only excuse I could think of for coming home with
ridiculous numbers cast iron nick knacks.

Looking forward to learning from and participating with this august group.

Cheers!

Bill
