41071 Jon Parry <jon@c...> 1998‑04‑09 BIO Jon Parry
Hello all on the porch,

I'm sending my bio a little late. I've been lurking for a couple of
years!. So here goes..

I work for a computer manufacturer in product marketing. I'm lucky
enough to live and work in Switzerland. (Land of cheese and far too
few 'oldtools'). I'm maried to Jayne and have two daughters, Lisa and
Nathalie (3 1/2 and 1 1/2 repect.)

I have been on the fringes of woodworking for over twenty years.
Before getting into computing I served an apprenticeship (so I guess
I can claim to be "time served") although not strickly in carpentery /
cabinetmaking.

I got re-interseted in woodworking about seven years ago, and started
to build up a shop. I have to admit that most of my early purchases
were of the type that needs 240v to make 'em go!. With the exception
of some basic chisels and planes. Subscribing to this group has fueled
my interest and, out and out 'lust' for hand tools - new and old.

I travel quite a lot on business so spare time and evenings are at a
premium. However when at home and kids permitting :-), I'm into all
aspects of cabinet work. I have a fairly well equiped shop. I have
completed a number of projects and I'm allways on the lookout for a
new design or interesting project to try out.

We are in the process of having a house built, and I've signed up to
'do' the kitchen. That will be this years big project and will take most
of the spare time I have over the summer months. I hope to be able to
set up my own web site later this summer, and aim to have a small
'gallery' of projects and an update on how the Kitchen turned out and
how the new 'shop' is progressing, with relevant tools pics etc. :-)

>From an 'oldtool' perspective, I collect wooden moulding / molding
planes, (I have about 50 or so) also Record and Marples (and pre.)
hand tools. (this mainly because they seem easier to come by here
in Europe.) Increasingly I find, I spend less time with a p*w%r tool
and more time with hand tools. I enjoy using well made quality
tools. On this subject I have recently got into a line of hand saws
by a London manufacturer, E.T Roberts & Lee. I can only imagine these
to be like the Disstons that are discussed here. Beautiful saws of
quality steel (plenty there to sharpen for the future) walnut handles
and brass backs / fitings as apropos, the sort of saw that once you
pick it up, you look for a piece of wood to cut!

I'll keep you posted on how the kitchen goes and needless to say
on any and all 'oldtool' scoops.!

Thanks for reading this, best regards to all,
Jon.
