36456 "Michael R. Shortreed" <mshort@C...LSA.umich.edu> 1998‑02‑06 another newbie bio
Hi all. Guess I shoulda done this first. I really have enjoyed the list
so far.

Where to start. Thirty year old chemist (post-doc=no moolah). Out of
graduate school (Michigan) for a year now. Undergrad at Purdue where I
met me lovely bride. Married since 94. Have a new baby (Cecilia 3 mos.)
who was the recipient of my first woodworking projects, a night table and
a changing table. Been in the woodworking business for less than a year.
Just finished my third project (wall hanging quilt rack with nic-nac
shelf) which will be a gift to my little sister. Recently into making
wooden handplanes. Haven't made any yet, just been reading about them. I
have one of Whelan's books and I am waiting to get another from ILL. Also
have one on 19th century planes by Robberts I think. Heading over to the
'brary' this aft. to put an order in on Hack's handplane book.

I have a fairly limited, but useful tool collection. Only one tool worth
mentioning would be the jack plane I inherited from my grandpa. A sargent
414. I tuned it myself I admit as my face turns red. Perhaps I could
submit my own entry to the "Worst refurbishing job ever thread". Oh well.
I wouldn't ever sell it anyway and quite frankly it isn't/wasn't even
worth that much from a monitary stand point. I can't wait until I really
get it working slick. I think I have the wrong angle on the iron. I SS'd
it to 25 degrees and then put on a 2 degree microbevel with my veritas
honing jig. When I set for shallow cut (1/64) I get nothing but a little
dust. I have to drop it down to (3/32) to get any kind of shaving but
that is way to thick. BTW I'm using red oak. Not to mention, the plane
is just dragging along. Kinda like cross cutting oak with a butter knife
if you catch my drift. So I'm gonna re-sharpen at 30 degrees and spend
more time on the microbevel. Last time I took 10 swipes on a 2000 grit.
I have the impression that all I really accomplished was giving the iron a
negative clearance angle. This time I'll go back to 1500 or 1200 and put
a nice line across the end. Also, the back is almost mirror like but not
enough for my liking. After I touch that up a bit life should improve.
Well anyway, enough for now.
