I found the Oldtools forum about a year ago will trying to research an early
H. Disston saw I had purchased at one of my favorite flea markets. I
received great assistance from several list members and was completely
hooked. I have to read the posts every day and frequently access the archive
which has many times provided data I could find no where else.
I started working in a dimension sandstone quarry and mill at age 17. I
worked there for nine years, mostly in maintenance, then maintenance
supervisor and finally plant manager just before the large company that
owned us sold the facility out for a tax write off. I guess I still hold a
grudge after thirty years.
It was a great place, still run by one huge Corliss steam engine and line
shafts when I first started. We had several blacksmiths who still made many
of the tools that we used. Many processes and practices had changed little
since the company's founding in 1898.
My parents are collectors and antique dealers and since their retirement
they have their own store.
All this providing me with a valid excuse for an interest in ( obsession
with) old tools ( + books, machinery etc).
This forum has provided me great solace in knowing I'm not alone in my tool
"interests".
Now I feel that I can ask if anyone has any info about a 22" wooden jointer
plane I found last week marked "D. Sargent, Manchester, NH" it came equipped
with a nearly perfect Auburn Tool Co., Thistle Brand iron.
