12577 <ANEOTOMA@a...> 1997‑01‑26 Bio.
.....just a note about myself. I'm a newbie to the list and the the
internet. I haven't had much time in the past to explore and play around
with the net. I'm a general building contactor on the Monterey Penninsula in
California. I have had an interest in old tools and woodworking since I was a
child watching a cabinet maker uncle of mine create works of art in his shop.
I have been collecting tools fairly avidly for the last 10 years, but have
not seen my collection growing as fast in the last couple of years due to
what seems to be a decrease in supply of fair and good quality tools, and an
increase in competion for them in our area. I try to specialize in
restoration and remodeling of vintage homes. I enjoy taking a botched up
Craftmen, Art Deco, or Victorian style homes that have had previous remodling
and turn them back into what they once were. Unfortunately not all the jobs
I have to take are what I enjoy, and I find myself doing all phases of
construction. I do not get to use my hand tools as much as I would like,
because of the publics beleifs in untruths that new is always better, and
Tim Allens' attitude that more power is always better. I have convinced
Others in the trades that these attitudes aren't always correct ,and find
myself being asked to lend out my slicks so they can scarf out joints on
beams, or my rabbet planes so they can plane smooth a wooden counter next to
a wall, or my mortising plane for hinges so they don't need to set-up their
jigs and router - and so forth. Now, if there was only a way to convince a
homeowner.... most of them have an image of a contractor being professional
if he has a power tool for every application. This is becoming more of a
venting of frustrations than a bio. , so back to little bit more about me. I
had been a member of P.A.S.T. in past ,but have not renewed my membership in
the last couple of years due to lack of time ...been busy due to the flooding
in Carmel from the Carmel River 2 yrs. ago, I keep getting called back for
additional improvements. I plan to renew my membership .... if I can remember
to. I've been married 23 yrs. and have a daughter that's 21, the pressures on
her to give me a heir to leave my collection to (but not soon I hope). My
wife's been fairly patient with me and my collecting obession , but she's
beginning to recognize the excuses of why I need the tool I purchased ,and to
make it worse she's beginning to recognize the tools as duplicates and
triplicates. I probably will be offering some of my collection FS when I can
decide what to sale so I can free up more room to purchase more. Face these
toys are a sickness.
