-319 "Kolb Scott" <srk@j...> 1970‑01‑01 Bio

Here is a short bio from a galoot-wannabe. I'm a 31 year old electrical
engineer for Lucent Technologies with a developing lust for handtools. Between
my family (wife, daughter, and a son on the way), a fixer-upper house in
central New Jersey, and a very active Labrador Retriever, I haven't had time to
actually build anything but I have lots of good intentions. My wife already
knows to roll her eyes and sigh when I suggest I can build a much better thing
than what she's looking to buy.

My interest in tools and woodworking stems from my father who is a long-time
trim carpenter. Though mostly "electrified", he still used hand planes and saws
on the job until all of his tools were recently stolen. I used to dream of
owning a Unisaw and the rest of Norm's shop before finding myself drooling over
planes in the Garret Wade catalog. Without any particular use in mind, I bought
new Stanley #4, #5, and #7 planes, sharpened them up with my Veritas jig and
some waterstones (I have to search the archives for this ScarySharp(TM) method
I keep reading about), and started shaving some old 2x4s. I'm hooked. That's
when my father told me there's a growing number of people devoted to collecting
old planes. I guess this list is where they hide. Two weeks of lurking has
certainly changed my bias against rusty (or is it patina) old tools.

I don't expect I'll have much to contribute but I'll continue to absorb the
collective knowledge and occasionally ask a simple question. In fact I have one
now: I've procrastinated using my random orbit sander (bought it before my
conversion) to refinish my oak stairs because SWMBO will hate the mess. My #4
is doing a great job but I can't get into the corners. Is this a good use for
a #90 bullnose plane or is there a better alternative?
