71722 Trevor Robinson <robinson@o...> 1999‑11‑29 Bio
Hi, All
It is long past time that I should have updated my Bio; so here
it is.
        Trevor Robinson

I have been working with both wood and metal for as long as I
can remember. When I was 7 or 8 years old one of my grandfathers
made a toolchest for me. As there were craftsmen of all kinds in my
family, it seemed just natural to be making things; and as soon as I had
space, I started building up my own shop.
It was only about the 1970's that I first became interested in
antique tools as a result of inheriting from various members of my
family and friends of the family. At first I looked at these as mostly
museum pieces, and I sold or gave away some things that I regret now.
Gradually, though, I started to use and appreciate the old tools; began
to look for additional ones; and joined a tool collectors group. Still. I
consider myself more a craftsman/user than a collector. I am using
and appreciating some tools that go back three generations before me,
for instance a lovely brass-backed saw that was carried here from
Wales in about 1870.
I have made all kinds of furniture and other cabinetry for my
family, but have never made any for sale. About thirty years ago I
started making musical instruments, both woodwind and brass, and
have continued with this to the present. I am the author of a book on
this subject, "The Amateur Wind Instrument Maker". I have sold a few
instruments, but this is more of a hobby than a business.
There is one type of tool that I would have to say I collect rather
than use. These are combination tool handles, which were popular at
the end of the last century and available from many different makers.
I have a display of about a hundred of these that I have shown several
places. Another thing I do regarding old tools is try to find information
about obscure makers. If anyone has seen wooden planes stamped H.
L Hart, W. H. Cary, IP, or IFM, I would appreciate very much knowing
about them.
