68476 Ivar.Moan@h... (Moan Ivar) 1999‑09‑24 BIO & RfA
Good galoots,

I have for a rather long period been mostly listening to the discussions
and lectures on the porch. When I say mostly, a few of you will know why.

BIO:

As you may see from my private address, I'm one of the overseas lurkers
seen from the yankee side of the pond. In addition I'm quite a bit up
north. A little north of the arctic circle to be a bit more accurate. I'm
living 50km east of the town Bodoe in the nothern part of Norway. The
climate is mostly coastal, but not as damp as many will think. The winter
brings snow down to the shores while the nothern light goes dancing in the
sky, while summer gives midnight sun and little sleep. (NO, we don't
hibernate in winter!)

I was born the same year as NATO became reality, and most of the time
afterwards has been spent in the same region as I'm living now. Woodworking
has always fasinated me, but most of the time it has been just the kind of
woodworking you do out of necessity. But for some reason I have never felt
at ease with p*w*r tools, and with three exceptions, I possess only
handtools. From what I hear from the porch, very few of them are really
oldtools in the meaning old tools. But if you by oldtools mean
old-fashioned handtools, then I have a few. Most of them originating from
factories in England and Sweden. Hopefully I will find more time to use
them in the years to come. There are a few bookcases and other small
furniture around my house that I have designed and built myself, but there
is a constant need for a lot of other items.

I hate to buy things, so my need for bees' wax is taken care of with a few
beehives. That also leeds to some honey, and also generates need for some
woodworking to stay away from expensive plastic solutions in connection
with the beehives.

RfA:

I will be staying in Lakeland, Michigan in the beginning of October.
Therefore this "Request for Advice". I'm visiting an old friend of mine,
and most of the time will probably be spent refreshening his norwegian and
memorising 'em ol' days when we worked together here in Norway in the early
seventies. But if there are markets, museums or other tool- or
craft-related sights in the area that I better be aware of, I will be be
grateful for knowledge about such. I will leave for the southern part of
Norway on wednesday 29th this month, and that means that information sent
me later than 10 o'clock US time on the 28th will not reach me until I'm
back home again.

I hope some of you find time to help me, and since it probably is of little
interest for most of the good people onthe porch, it is probably wise to
send it to my private address.

Have a nice weekend all of you! I really enjoy this group!
