50544 EricM61635@a... 1998‑09‑26 bio out of the blue
well this is my second attempt at the bio, the first one disappeared along
with the power. i am an electrical contractor by day and an apprentice
neanderthal by night. i am a thirty something with a swmbo (aka the war
department) and 2 kids.

to answer the age old question of whether neanderthalism is hereditery or
caused by environment, i can answer environment. my introduction to
woodworking was in high school shop class- our first task was to grind and
sharpen plane iron for a #5. our first project was to make a sanding block. i
ended up with a door stop instead. the big project was a plaque made from six
or seven pieces of wood all hand planed. we had a jointer and a big planer
(20"+) in the shop, but hand planing was the way to go.( thanks mr. lindley).
i guess this was my first love/hate relationship with a plane.

fast forward 15 years and my first son is due in a couple months. i decide to
build a cradle out of the woodsmith magazine. this was my first venture since
high school and never knew hardwood lumber came in randoms. uh oh. fortunately
my buddy's father ran a park district woodshop ($20. a year). although we used
primarily norm techniques, my woodworker urges reawakened.

i now have the usual assortment of power and handtools. i have about 8 planes
none of which cost over $30. except for the #45 which was $100. with a set of
blades. to satisfy my male urges to brag about having the biggest plane, i
recently found an 8c ($27.) like most galoots i have about 6 projects in
various states of incompletion.( it just lacks finishing, dear). i still work
primarily at the park, but i am trying to set up in the garage. i have about 6
feet of bowling alley on horses now. this one just lacks starting.

i am still resisting the urge to collect, but that flea market next week is
calling my name.

cheers
eric

i keep cutting it and it is still too short?!
