271777 Tim <tpendleton@g...> 2020‑09‑15 Aluminum #6 in Video
GGs,

In this video, a Shipwright gives an aluminum #6 plane (a lightweight big
brother to a #5, Jeff) on some 25' long planks. For the squeamish, a few
electrons did take one for the team at one point in the video.

Bonus: there is some genuine Galoot Tool Porn at the end of the video.

Tim,

Thanks for posting that.

Would the Shipwright have been better off with a Stanley #51 Chute [Shoot] Board
Plane, or the Lie-Nielsen version?

plane-?path=handplanes&node=4063">https://www.lie-nielsen.com/products/no-51

Per Patrick’s Blood & Gore, Stanley said “Chute,” whereas Lie-Nielsen uses
“Shoot.” I’m not sure which I prefer; probably “Shoot.”)

John,

I get the feeling that he settled on his kit of hand tools in the last
century and never looked back. He was certainly not bashful about modifying
his electron-muncher to fit his work methods. He certainly deserves a spot
on 'Team Galoot'. :)

Tim, and GG’s

As you could see by the absence of a signature, I accidentally hit “send” before
that last post was entirely complete.

I agree with Tim’s observation; this craftsman is getting the work done with the
tools with which he’s familiar. They are like old friends; he knows exactly
what they are going to do. That said, I do think he should explore modern
ergonometric knee pads.

Exploring my question, I thought the 51’s angled handle and wide “off side”
might be easier on the wrists and hands. The skewed blade would tend to hold
the plane down.

Flip side is that an Aluminum #6 is considerably lighter!

Wiktionary lists a planing action among the many meanings for 'shoot' .
But the meanings for chute or shute seem to more appropriately refer to
the action of planing on a squaring or mitre jig. The plane runs along a
controlled path, somewhat like a miner's chute.
