Gentle Galoots, I mostly look for pictures on CL Garage/Estate sale listings, though a description of 'garage/basement full of tools' will always pierce the haze of baby clothes and exercise gear. The picture on this sale in what is absolutely the WORST part of Berkeley for parking piqued my interest enough to circle the block 3 times. The size so it was a guess. Seller is a metal worker, progressively working smaller down to jewelry now, in a tiny garage shop full of ring rollers and open throated shears. dragged out from under the bench, he bought it years ago, and promptly built an all thread and bottle jack press. I grabbed it for a Jackson, got into a nice convo with a kid who's done a little blacksmithiing with a local DIY youth camp and it ready, according to his mom, to move up to the industrial arts co op in Oakland. Anyway, dragged the press, I'm assuming its a press, home, chain hoisted it up to a convenient height, mostly just to play with a new chain hoist. loosened up the stops and spun it. Spins easily, the ram moved an inch and a quarter and reciprocates as long as you spin the wheel. the tool holder will take 5/8 round so I'll probably pick up some drill rod and make some tooling. With such a limited throw, I doubt I can use this for more than pressing in the tab on bottle openers but its a neat piece of cast iron. Not a mark on it, and I can't think of a group better suited to ID'ing this contraption. Multiple searches have not turned up anything, but I'm probably using the wrong term. I'm at work so I can't look at the pics, but from the description, I would conjecture either a punch press (you use a punch and die to punch work from strip metal- these are quite common in many sizes, and show up cheap third hand, as people buy them based on the high specified force without understanding that they are not suitable as a shop press) or a small stamping press. *** This message was sent from a convenience email service, and the reply address(es) may not match the originating address |

Michael, It looks like an arbor press to me. Kevin |

Looked at the pics and vid. High confidence that it is a small punch press, though I don't recognize the particular model. The slots to either side of the platten are to bolt down the die plate, the slot in the middle is for the part to drop. This might be used for small sheet parts like washers and gaskets, or for forming small sheet articles like small tins. *** This message was sent from a convenience email service, and the reply address(es) may not match the originating address |

Michael, These small presses were used by a variety of trades, including paper, leather, metal and foil embossing, as well as jewellery. I've a few hundred sets of punches and dies for such a tool. Used for pressing out all kinds of jewellery components. The smaller items would be able to be done on a small press like yours. These would include small ring and brooch shoulders that are about 3-4mm x 1-2mm in size. Here are some images and a video of me making gallery wire using one set of about 8 I have. Gallery wire is a strip of pieced metal, brought round and soldered to form the setting with prongs to set a gemstone. Once set up properly, it would go much faster than my attempt here, hehehe. http://www.petermcbride.com/temp/images1/gallery%20wire/gallery_wire03.jpg http://www.petermcbride.com/temp/images1/gallery%20wire/gallery_wire02.jpg http://www.petermcbride.com/temp/images1/gallery%20wire/gallery_wire01.jpg https://youtu.be/hQ4fNoxOV-g Cheers, Peter In Main Ridge, VIC, AUST. |

Thank you everyone for the information on my new toy! I'm not quite sure how I'll fit this into my rather crude blacksmithing setup. At the moment, I think a ball punch for the lifting tabs on bottle openers (and with so much good beer in cans now!) and maybe a narrow cutting tool for incising lines on hot work. I just knew this group would come through in record time. Thank you, Michael On Tue, Nov 12, 2019 at 3:39 PM Peter McBride |
