GGGGG

I am building a hanging wall cabinet and need a wood source. It is for my
luthier-daughter and I want the 2 doors to look like the back of a maple
guitar/fiddle, much like this:

https://www.flickr.com/photos/ruby1638/31416705017/in/album-72157703262606191/

Scroll to the right. I am having a hard time finding anything even near this in
the size I need - 2 doors at 13” wide by 36” tall - so I am thinking about going
to veneer. Does anyone have a possible source of a veneer like this?

Many thanks

Ed -

These guys have some fiddleback/tiger maple veneer -

https://www.veneersupplies.com/search.php?search_query=fiddleback

but finding it in that width will be a problem. Easy to find stuff 6-8”, but I
don’t think I have seen any 13” wide.

Ed,

You don't say what orientation you are looking for, or whether your
doors will be framed or frameless.  Here are some relatively large
pieces of fiddle back maple.  A single glue joint is doable though I
would avoid trying if possible.

Poking around their site, I think that curly sycamore could be taken for curly
maple:

I am not afraid of a joint - should I be??

Back in the late 90s I bought from http://www.curlymaple.com/

I used to purchase the Bundled Lots in 25 board foot sizes. Those are pretty
reasonable even with shipping. The lumber is great in terms of figure.

As I recall it was owned by Pete Taren's father. Pete Taran and Patrick Leach
started Independence Tools to make back saws, I believe that it was then
purchased by the Lie-Nielsen. Back in the days when IT was talked about in
every third post, Gunterman shaves in the next third and the solution to
everything was Shellac from Odeen.

If you look at the website, they have some great stock.

Doesn’t Sycamore darken as it ages more than maple? Anybody know? I saw some in
cabinets that were over 100 years old and it was more like Cherry, but then it
could have been stained at some time.

Well, Ed, in theory seaming veneer is relatively straight forward. But
like many things you don't know what you don't know. I've had good luck
with a considerable pile of veneered panels in projects the last couple
years, but no seaming. On one small box I tried seaming a 12-inch piece
for the bottom. I clamped the edges in a pair of straight boards,
sanded them straight and square, easily taped the joint together, and
glued it down. It looked perfect until I took a sander to it. After
sanding half the joint looked like it had a rolled edge (no I won't
explain that). The problem may have been in the yard-sale veneer I was
using. I'd practice on something expendable before I'd tackle my
expensive finished project.

I've placed a couple orders with Veneer Supplies and have been satisfied
with their products and service; no affiliation.

Thanks Bill

I have done a number of guitar backs and tops at 19-22” long with very good
success. The wood is 1/8” thick which might make that job easier. Is there a
good way to glue down veneer on a slightly curved panel without resorting to
vacuum bags? Sandbags? Is it really necessary to put a veneer on the back if
it is the same species?

I googled it and it looks like a crap shoot. As many were still light as were
shades of red-brown down to cherry

Ed I know you are now leaning toward veneer, but in the event that you
started with solid wood but were unaware of these vendors I offer them up
to you...I know both but have not bought from either of them as of yet
