Some time ago I came across a little book which is proving to be quite
interesting.
Workshop Appliances, by CPB Shelley ( 10th ed., Longmans Green & Co.,
London and New York, 1894), apparently part of a series 'Text-books of
Science, Adapted for the use of Artisans and Students in Public and
Science schools'.
Much of the book is devoted to metalworking and metalworking machinery,
but there is considerable discussion of hand tools, measurement and
treadle lathes. The measurement section contains a comparison of line
measure ( think ruler ) vs end measurement ( think calipers ). A section
on file-making is the most detailed I have encountered. One particularly
fascinating claim is that the fineness of hand-cut files was down to
3000 cuts per inch!
