Hi,

I'm Jon Vetterlein, from Springfield, Va, near Washington, D.C. I've
been woodworking in my free time since about 1980, have acquired some
big power tools, and have read a lot of books and built a lot of pieces
from plans and from copying pictures; went to a Tage Frid seminar once
and learned how to hand-cut dovetails, and then practiced by making a
slew of Shaker step-stools. Anyway, I've recently re-discovered the
enjoyment and utility of working with hand tools (other than dovetail
saws and chisels) -- I could never get them sharp or tuned well enough
(actually, saws and chisels fall into this category as well) to work
right before. About ten years ago I had bought Mike Dunbar's book and
started making a Windsor chair . . . I still have the three seat blanks
I started . . . then this past March I finally went to the class and
learned a lot that I never could have gotten from the book alone (or
from trial and error), and I've been working on a set of six for the
kitchen. In that class, Mike examined my plane I was attempting to use
(a Union #6 with a missing lateral adjustment lever, dull blade, and
unflat sole) and advised me to unload it on someone else. So along with
the windsors, I tried to pick up as much as I could about hand planes
and sharpening.
For the purposes of revealing more about what type of person I am, I
will tell you that about ten years ago I bought a wood threading kit
from Conover that I NEVER USED except once, when I first got it, and
made some threads on the end of a dowel! I really liked it, though.
Well, last weekend I made a set of handscrews. My wife was as happy for
me as could be expected, but still asks me when the next piece of
furniture will physically come out of the garage and into the house to
use. I have been reassuring her that the old hand planes I've been
buying will actually help me to make better furniture than I could
before with power tools alone, but I've noticed that that excuse is no
longer as effective as it used to be. I'm not certain, but I suspect
she's even tired of going out every weekend with me to antique stores
and auctions to look for old tools. Anyway, I'd like to know if any of
you live near me, and especially would like to meet any windsor
chairmakers who live close.

Jon
