12546 JUSTIN A. HABER <JAH@c...> 1997‑01‑25 Bio
Dear Galoots:

I was informed I had made a major breach of etiquette by
submitting questions before my bio, so here goes:

I am 35 years old and a software engineer by training. I am
married, no kids, one Bloodhound and some goldfish, and we live in a
suburb west of Boston.
I first learned woodworking in shop classes in Jr. High and High
School. My interests lay dormant during college and life as an
apartment dweller, but were rekindled once I bought a house.
Fixing up the house and furnishing it provided an excuse to begin
accumulating woodworking tools to augment those for my bicycle
and car. My epiphany WRT edge tools came when I bought a block plane that came
with instructions. I was very surprised to learn that irons come only beveled,
not sharpened. Boy, what a difference a properly sharpened plane makes!
I gained further experience, and tools, after a recent layoff. I
decided to try carpentry, working for a contractor friend, and
rehabbing a house, solo.
I am (under)employed again in software engineering, but the
job has a galoot benefit: access to a Bridgeport to flatten my planes.
Hope I don't do more harm than good...
For this bio, I took a brief inventory of my traditional tools, and
realized I have 14 planes (but I NEED more), several hand saws, a bit
brace, chisels, and the requisite home owner's p*wer tools.
The recent floods nearly drown the p*wer drill and saw, but,
mercifully, didn't reach the planes.
My next projects planned are a workbench (how original), tool
storage, and more book shelves.
My other interests include backpacking, wind surfing, sailing, beer and cider m
aking, and showing my dog.
