Esteemed Galoots:

I’m way overdue to post a bio, and I got some questions, so I’m a
comin’ out from under this here porch. I’m 35 with a SWMBO, 4yr and
8 week old GITs. Former prosecutor, now tax attorney for the state.
I’ll have more questions than answers. I’ve been lurking for almost
two years, read about your Christmas exchanges, and I’ve seen the
topic of corrugated soles and the great friction debate evolve into sole
lapping (and visa-versa) about four or five times now. I have learned so
much from your collective wisdom.

Basement shop, I’ve got Norm’s basics, but the Neanderthal tools are
gaining ground, built dresser drawers, a bed, humidors, cabinets,
vanities, and a fireplace surround. For fun I’ll work with my
brother-in-law (residential contractor) occasionally on the weekends and
do some finish/trim work. Guys on the job-site say I’m going Amish on
them when I break out a panel saw and a Stanley 65, but when they
can’t figure out how to do things, they come to me. Now they’re all
bringing me rusty block planes out of their grandpa’s basement and
asking me to tune it up for them. I see it as missionary work :)

The slope got slippery when I started going to flea markets, auctions
trying to acquire user tools. I’m strictly a bottom feeder, but I keep
running across tools I don’t need and I can‘t pass up, so I sell
them on that website so I can buy what I want and don’t have to
involve the SWMBO. I’m maybe stage 2 or 3.

SWMBO said something about kitchen chairs, so I got the Dunbar book,
then I got Langer’s (sp?) book, and pulled into our driveway with a
9’ maple log in the back of the pickup. I’m teaching myself how to
turn, buts its a slow process because I keep cleaning these pesky tools!

I ran into a mother lode of rusty planes that I’ve been cleaning up.
It would be bad taste to post a gloat in a bio, wouldn’t it? Ok, (5)
bedrocks, (3) 4 1/2, 5 1/2, Sarg 708, 65, 3’s, 4’s, 6’s, 7’s,
60’s, and a massive chute-board plane that will be the topic of
another post. Total 32 planes, $7 each ;)) If it makes you feel any
better, they are pretty rusty.

I know the routine, I’ll sit on the stoop and try to listen more
than I talk.

Matt Chafin
