1065 eugene@n... 1996‑06‑15 intro
Hi wood artisans:
I'm Gene Sexton, formerly machinist, then engineer, now, (what should I call
it...) "restorationist?". Unchained from my desk, I repair and restore old
houses, furniture, radio cabinets, etc. Current projects are restoring a
little house in the woods (c. 1860), and a second one (c. 1930). Both 10
miles from anything, down dirt paths with no electric power. Great excuse
(need) to use my old hand tools.

I've been buying old tools ever since I realized they are well made and do a
job that looks right. They're prettier, too. I didn't know there were
collectors out there. I've been using my #8 just because it makes a good
butt joint.

I'm glad to find someone to victimize with my gloats. My wife will be
relieved. She has had to fake appreciation, even though she once worked as a
cabinetmaker's helper.

One of these old houses had a shed full of old tools, abandoned around 1940.
The owner asked me to identify that "wierd stuff" in there, and keep
anything I could use. And I get paid for this?- what a great job!

I could flood you with pleas for help identifying things, and my dumb
questions, but I'll try to control myself. Like, one a week???
