206579 Peter Robinson <peter.robinson.old.tools@g...> 2010‑07‑27 Requests re dovetail saw by Bowdon & Co Sheffield
Hi all,

Yesterday I recieved a small dovetail saw which I purchased recently. It
has an open handle, the tapered blade is 8 inches (20cm) long and has a
steel back. I have not yet cleaned it so if there is an etch it remains
obscured. The back is stamped as follows:

  BOWDON & CO SHEFFIELD

Some photos of the saw are in the following gallery on GIC:

m_copperminevis&Itemid=2&place=thumbnails&album I have searched various
directories, sites, etc and have not yet found much detail of this
maker. There are a couple of mentions relating to Joseph Tyzack. The
list archives don't even have anything apart from a couple of old notes
about saws for sale.

So, a couple of requests:

1. Does anybody have some detail related to Bowdon & Co? (It's time I
ordered "Hand-Saw Makers of Britain" so that's been added to the high
   priority list).

2. One of the brass nuts is missing and has been replaced by a copper
rivet which I would like to re-replace with an old split nut
rather than a new shiny version. Does any Aussie galoot happen to
have a spare old split nut (is it called a nut and bolt?). The
remaining original is a squidge under 7/16" and I seem to only
   have 1/2" versions.

thanks, Peter

Hi Peter,

It's a secondary product line by Joseph Tyzack, I'm not sure why he
chose the name, but they moved from Fitzwilliam St to Bowden St at some
point, probably in the 1870's so it's possible the street name was the
inspiration for the product line.

I can't see the images you linked to, it asks me for a password, but
here is one of the couple I have, maybe yours is similar.

little saw, congratulations on a nice find.
